How Sally & Mark Rice Turned a Dream into a JRECK Subs Legacy

How Sally Mark Rice

At JRECK Subs, our franchisees are the heart and soul of our brand, and Sally and Mark Rice perfectly exemplify the dedication, teamwork, and passion that define our community.

A Journey That Began in the 1980s

Mark’s story with JRECK Subs began in 1981 when he answered a job ad for an accounting position. Little did he know, that role at the corporate office in Watertown, NY, would set the stage for a lifelong commitment to the JRECK Subs brand. At the time, he was the company’s sole employee.

“We relocated to Watertown, marking the start of our lifelong commitment to JRECK Subs,” Mark reflects.

That same year, Sally joined the team, starting as part of the crew at the Arsenal Street store. She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a night manager and eventually managing the Mill Street store in Watertown by 1983. In 1984, Sally and Mark purchased that location, officially stepping into franchise ownership.

Building a Legacy

The Rices didn’t stop there. They partnered with Pete and Rita Whitmore in 1986 to acquire the Carthage location, which was originally owned by JRECK co-founder Charlie Lehman. By 1988, they expanded again, joining forces with Pete, Rita, Dale, and Michelle Barr to open the Lowville store.

In 1990, they added the State Street store to their portfolio, purchasing it from JRECK co-founder Jerry Haley. Their growth continued into the 2000s when they reopened the Arsenal Street location, a full-circle moment for Sally.

Now, they’re thrilled to bring the Arsenal Street store to its new location, showcasing the refreshed JRECK Subs branding (stay tuned for more announcements on this!!).

More Than Just Subs

For Sally and Mark, JRECK Subs isn’t just a business—it’s been a way of life. Their journey began with date nights at the Canton JRECK Subs in the 1970s, where “what if” dreams of owning a JRECK Subs turned into decades of cherished memories, meaningful relationships with customers, and countless employees who became like family to the Rices.

Their secret to success in the franchise? A perfect balance of skills. Mark’s financial expertise and Sally’s talent for connecting with people have made them an unbeatable team.

Sally and Mark’s favorite order is a classic—Ham & Cheese.

About JRECK Subs

JRECK Subs began with five teachers from Carthage Central High School—Jerry, Robert, Ellis, Charles, and Keith—selling submarine sandwiches from a converted school bus. The name “JRECK” comes from the first letter of each founder’s name, a unique origin for a brand that’s become a staple across New York. Today, JRECK continues to serve fresh, made-to-order subs while staying true to its humble beginnings.
